The Pocket Handy Saw is a compact steel survival saw with sharp pull-cut teeth, designed for cutting small branches, preparing kindling, and handling camp tasks while fitting into a pocket or survival kit.
I was fishing a lonely stretch of river in the Alaskan backcountry when the weather turned mean. One minute the mountains were standing proud beneath a blue sky. The next, a wall of dark clouds came rolling over the ridge like somebody upstairs had lost his temper.
By sundown, the wind was howling, the temperature had dropped below freezing, and my little campsite was getting a proper thrashing.
I found a fallen spruce, pulled the Pocket Handy Saw from my coat, and went to work cutting branches for a windbreak. The sharp steel teeth made short work of the smaller limbs, and before long I’d built myself a respectable bit of shelter.
I spent that evening huddled beside the fire, listening to the storm tear through the trees.
I’d come to Alaska hoping to catch a king salmon. Instead, I got a lesson in humility from the weather.
The fish, naturally, had the good sense to stay underwater.
